“That anime stuff is just for kids”
“Anime is a kids thing”
“When are you going to grow up and stop watching cartoons!?”
How many anime fans have had to weather these comments from parents?
Even as adults, we are embarrassed to admit that we enjoy our favourite past time? Why? for fear of being labelled an ‘adult child’.
Don’t you wish you could sit these people down and have them watch an anime that challenges their views on anime as a medium? Something to silence their disdainful, dismissive remarks that anime is merely a child’s plaything.
Enter Code Geass. Now, on the surface it has all the hallmarks of a typical anime: flashy colours, bright costume, and outragous characters.
These are where the similarities end.
Code Geass is one of the most thought-provoking anime’s I have had the privelage of seeing. It forgoes the usual monochrome character arrangements: “This is bad guy, this is good guy” for something far more interesting.
Perspective. If you look at a character from this point, they are good, look at it from another and they are bad. It really does depend on how you want to see a character.
The storyline is far too complex for children to understand and the battle scenes are too intense, this is not some child’s show where people are knocked down or just hurt in some mild fashion. This anime has death, lots of it, it has weapons of mass destruction, it has terrorists and issues that strike a bit close to home.
I highly recommend this anime for anyone who is looking for something that is a departure from the Bleach or Naruto’s out there.
Character designs by CLAMP, and featuring Johnny Yong Bosch as the main character: Lelouch vi Britannia!
Code Geass: an anime that tastes almost as good as carrots! ^^
